Knocking out ace reliever Rich Gossage with a four-run rally in the eighth inning, the Indians outlasted the Yankees, 12-9, cutting the Yanks' lead in the East Division to 2½ games. After a three-run pinch-homer by Dennis Werth gave the Yankees a 9-8 lead in the seventh, the Indians retaliated in the eighth.

Alan Bannister opened with a single and took second on a passed ball. A pinch-single by Joe Charboneau plated Bannister. Miguel Dilone ran for Charboneau. After Dave Rosello singled, Gossage struck out Tom Veryzer and Jorge Orta before walking Rick Manning to load the bases. Mike Hargrove then singled to drive in two runs and, after Ron Hassey followed with an RBI single, Gossage went to the showers. [The Sporting News]
