The Yankees clinched at least a tie for the East Division championship by downing the Tigers, 3-2. The Tigers were leading, 1-0, going into the bottom of the fourth inning when oscar Gamble slammed a leadoff homer.

Reggie Jackson then followed with a towering shot over the right-center field fence. The Yankees picked up another run in the sixth when Gamble walked, reached third on a single by Jackson and came in on a sacrifice fly by Bob Watson. [The Sporting News]
