Posting a 2-1 victory in the opener of the series, the Phillies took a one-game lead over the Expos with two games left to play in the East Division race. Mike Schmidt batted in both Phils' runs. In the first inning, Pete Rose singled, Bake McBride doubled and Schmidt plated Rose with a sacrifice fly.

Then in the sixth, Schmidt hit his 47th homer for the deciding run. The Expos counted in their half on a double by Jerry White, pass to Rodney Scott, sacrifice by Rowland Office and sacrifice fly by Andre Dawson. [The Sporting News]
