Although the victims of a triple play, the Padres easily defeated the Giants, 12-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Steve Mura. In the fourth inning, with Padres runners on first and second, Giants' rookie infielders executed a triple play on a line drive by Dave Cash.

The ball was caught by second baseman Guy Sularz, who threw to shortstop Joe Pettini, catching Lui Salazar off second. Pettini's relay to first baseman Rich Murray tripled up Gene Tenace. Salazar led the Padres at bat, driving in four runs, including three with a homer in the first inning. [The Sporting News]
