A record-breaking 48th homer by Mike Schmidt with a man on base in the 11th inning won the East Division title for the Phillies, who defeated the Expos, 6-4. With his round-tripper, Schmidt set a major league record for homers by a third baseman, breaking the former mark of Eddie Matthews of the Milwaukee Braves in 1957.

Jerry White drove in three runs for the Expos with a homer and sacrifice fly and Rodney Scott batted in one with a double to provide a 4-3 lead, but the Phillies rallied to tie the score in the ninth inning on a pass to Pete Rose, forceout by Bake McBride, infield out by Schmidt and single by pinch-hitter Bob Boone.
