Solo homers by Ken Singleton and Rick Dempsey provided the victory margin as the Orioles downed the Royals, 5-3, in the season opener for both teams. Singleton's shot came in the first inning and Dempsey's came in the sixth to give the Birds a 5-3 lead.

An error by Royals left fielder Amos Otis opened the gates for a two-run Baltimore rally in the fifth frame. After Al Bumbry drew a two-out walk, Otis dropped Rich Dauer's routine fly. Consecutve walks to Singleton, Eddie Murray and Doug DeCinces then forced home two tallies. [The Sporting News]
