Mike Schmidt cracked a three-run homer in the first inning and Dick Ruthven pitched a five-hitter as the Phillies downed the Cardinals, 5-2, in the home opener for St. Louis. Schmidt's blast followed a double by Pete Rose and walk to Manny Trillo.

The Cards pulled off a triple play in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Gary Matthews hit a low line drive to shortstop Garry Templeton. Although the umpire ruled a clean catch, Templeton thought the ball had been trapped and threw to catcher Darrell Porter, who relayed the ball to first baseman Keith Hernandez. The umpire ruled Schmidt had retouched first and Hernandez threw the ball to second baseman Tommy Herr to nail Schmidt for the second out. Herr then fired the ball to third baseman Ken Oberkfell, who tagged Bake McBride to complete the triple play. [The Sporting News]
