Completing the three-game series sweep, the Yankees downed the Tigers, 7-2, as rookie first baseman Steve Balboni tripled in his first major league at-bat and drew a bases-loaded walk in a five-run seventh inning to receive credit for the tie-breaking RBI. With the score 2-2 in the seventh, Lou Piniella drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a double by Graig Nettles.

After Dennis Werth received an intentional pass, Balboni walked on four pitches, forcing home Piniella. Subsequent runs came on a sacrifice fly by Bucky Dent, two-run single by Jerry Mumphrey and RBI single by Dave Winfield. Reggie Jackson collected his 412th career homer, a solo shot in the fourth.
