Continuing the recovery from his subpar sophomore season when he was 3-9, Rick Sutcliffe won his second successive decision by handcuffing San Diego on five hits before getting ninth-inning relief help from Steve Howe in the Dodgers' 3-1 triumph over the Padres. Sutcliffe helped his own cause with a run-scoring single in the second.

Steve Garvey produced an RBI hit in the sixth and Ken Landreaux drove in the final Los Angeles run in the seventh. The Padres averted the shutout in the eighth when Jerry Turner slugged a pinch-homer. [The Sporting News]
