The Angels and Twins split a doubleheader, the Angels winning the first game, 7-1, as Mike Witt recorded his first major league victory on a two-hitter, and the Twins capturing the second contest, 5-2. The Angels scored four runs in the fifth inning of the opener on run-scoring singles by Bert Campaneris and Rick Burleson, a bases-loaded walk and an error. The final two California runs of the game came on a hit batsman with the bases full and a wild pitch.

The Twins jumped to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the nightcap on a two-run homer by Roy Smalley that followed an error by Campaneris. [The Sporting News]
