A two-run homer by Mike Schmidt keyed the Phillies' 6-2 victory over the Cubs. The score was 1-1 in the third inning when Bake McBride doubled and Schmidt hit for the circuit. The Phils added two more markers in that frame on a run-scoring single by Larry Bowa and RBI groundout by Bob Boone.

Their twelfth straight loss dropped the Cubs' record to 1-13, tying the club record for futility over the first 14 games of the season. The 1944 Cubs won their opener and then lost 13 straight. [The Sporting News]
