After the Padres tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the eighth on a run-scoring double by Ruppert Jones, Steve Garvey led off the bottom of the frame with a single, was sacrificed to second by Ron Cey and, after a walk to Pedro Guerrero, scored on Smith's two-bagger.
