With nine strikeouts in the Phillies' 6-2 decision over the Expos, Steve Carlton boosted his career total to 3,006 and became the first lefthander in major league history to scale the 3,000 strikeout plateau. The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never were headed.

Gary Matthews doubled, advanced to third on Keith Moreland's groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Garry Maddox. Carlton drove in two runs, with a single in the fifth and a double in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
