Taking advantage of Seattle errors, the Tigers rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to post an 8-5 victory over the Mariners. The Tigers trailed, 5-3, when Lou Whitaker led off the seventh with a single and reached second safely when second baseman Julio Cruz dropped the throw from shortstop Jim Anderson on an attempted forceout on Ricky Peters' grounder.

Two outs later, Larry Andersen replaced Bryan Clark on the mound and induced Lance Parrish to hit a grounder to shortstop Anderson, who bobbled the ball, allowing Whitaker to score. A walk to pinch-hitter Richie Hebner loaded the bases and an infield single by Al Cowens plated Peters with the tying run.
