Homers by Lou Piniella and Barry Foote and sensational relief pitching by Ron Davis carried the Yankees to a 4-3 triumph over the Angels. The score was 2-2 with one out in the sixth inning when Piniella connected for the circuit. One out later, Foote also slammed a round-tripper.

Davis, in relief of Gene Nelson, who made his major league debut, pitched three hitless innings, striking out the last eight batters he faced. The performance tied Nolan Ryan's A. L. consecutive strikeout record and set a big league mark for consecutive strikeouts for relief pitchers, eclipsing the mark of seven set by Denny McLain in 1965. [The Sporting News]
