After giving up four runs on five hits over the first three innings, Steve Carlton permitted just two hits the rest of the way in recording his 254th career victory, 6-4 over the Giants. The Phils trailed, 4-3, with one out in the sixth when Garry Maddox and Larry Bowa stroked consecutive singles.

A single by Bob Boone drove home Maddox and Bowa reached third when left fielder Larry Herndon bobbled the ball. Carlton then grounded to shortstop Johnnie LeMaster, who bobbled the ball before throwing out Carlton, allowing Bowa to score.
