Making his second start in three days and pressed into service because of the unavailability of Vida Blue, Tom Griffin scattered four hits in seven innings to pick up the victory as the Giants staved off the Mets, 9-7. The veteran righthander also belted a solo homer in the third inning and stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth.

The six-run Giants' fifth was highlighted by a two-run triple by Larry Herndon and two-run homer by Billy Smith. The Mets rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the ninth and had two runners on base before Greg Minton got the final out by inducing Mike Cubbage to fly out to left. [The Sporting News]
