The Angels scored their initial run in the fourth inning when Tommy John threw a wild pitch after the bases were loaded on singles by Rick Burleson and Dan Ford and a walk to Don Baylor. After the Yankees countered with a tally in the sixth, the Angels pushed across the winner in the bottom half on a double by Ford, sacrifice by Bert Campaneris and Baylor's bouncer over drawn-in shortstop Larry Milbourne.
