Surviving a shaky start, Fernando Valenzuela upped his record to 7-0 and recorded his fifth shutout as the Dodgers edged the Mets, 1-0. The rookie southpaw yielded three walks and three hits in the first two innings but pitched out of bases-loaded jams in both frames and was in complete control thereafter.

Valenzuela finished with 11 strikeouts, the fourth time he's struck out 10 or more batters this season. The lone run of the game came in the first inning when Ken Landreaux reached first safely on an error by shortstop Bob Bailor, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a single by Dusty Baker.
