Charlie Lea, unable to get through the fifth inning in his two previous starts, pitched the first no-hitter in the majors this season to give the Expos a 4-0 victory over the Giants in the second game of a doubleheader after the Giants won the first game, 5-1. There were no hard-hit balls or outstanding defensive plays as Lea became the first Expos pitcher to hurl a no-hitter since Bill Stoneman on October 2, 1972. The Expos got all their runs in the seventh inning on a leadoff homer by Tim Wallach, two-run double by Rodney Scott and run-scoring double by Andre Dawson. In the opener, the Giants backed Tom Griffin's four-hit pitching with a 12-hit attack. The Giants scored two runs in the first inning on a solo homer by Enos Cabell and run-scoring single by Larry Herndon. Cabell hit an RBI groundout in the secnod stanza, Rennie Stennett stroked a run-scoring single in the third and Darrell Evans belted a solo round-tripper in the sixth. [The Sporting News] |
