After a four-run outburst in the first inning, the Cardinals held on to edge the Braves, 4-3. Tony Scott got a one-out infield single and reached third on a throwing error by shortstop Rafael Ramirez. A single by Keith Hernandez plated Scott, and George Hendrick also singled.

A single by Dane Iorg scored Hernandez and Iorg took second on the throw home. Ken Oberkfell capped the inning with a two-run single. Bruce Sutter, although giving up two runs in two innings, notched his eighth save. [The Sporting News]
