A four-run rally in the ninth inning lifted the Pirates to a 6-4 victory over the Cubs. The Bucs trailed, 4-2, when Mike Easler opened the ninth with a double and scored on a single by Pihl Garner, who raced to third on a single by Tim Foli. Matt Alexander was inserted as a pinch-runner for Foli and Doug Capilla replaced Mike Krukow on the hill for the Cubs.

Willie Stargell then tied the game with a pinch-single and was replaced by pinch-runner Eddie Solomon. Capilla was lifted in favor of Dick Tidrow, who struck out pinch-hitter Dale Berra and Lee Lacy. But Omar Moreno singled to right to put the Bucs ahead, 5-4, and Bill Madlock singled for an insurance run.
