The Braves routed Fernando Valenzuela in a seven-run fourth inning and went on to trim the Dodgers, 9-4, behind Gaylord Perry's 293rd career victory. With one out in the fourth, Dale Murphy and Chris Chambliss delivered back-to-back singles. Glenn Hubbard walked, filling the bases, and Bruce Benedict singled, scoring Murphy.

After Chambliss was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Rafael Ramirez, Perry contributed a two-run single and Rufino Linares and Biff Pocoroba followed with run-scoring singles.
