The Reds were behind, 3-2, when Ron Oester began the bottom of the eighth with a single and reached second on a sacrifice. After pinch-hitter Larry Biittner walked, Dave Collins forced Biittner at second, Oester advancing to third.

Pitcher Gary Lavelle then threw wildly past first on an attempted pickoff as Oester scored and Collins raced to third. Collins tallied on a single by Sam Mejias. After a walk to Dave Concepcion, Lavelle was relieved by Greg Minton, who was greeted by George Foster's two-run double. A run-scoring single by Dan Driessen climaxed the rally. [The Sporting News]
