The Phillies took over first place in the N.L. East, downing the Cardinals, 6-1, as Steve Carlton breezed to his eighth straight victory on a five-hitter. The Phils scored three runs in the fourth inning on Gary Maddox's single and a two-run single by Bob Boone.

Manny Trillo drilled an RBI double in the fifth and came in on a sacrifice fly by Gary Matthews. Another sacrifice fly by Matthews produced the final marker in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
