Gorman Thomas belted a three-run homer to cap a four-run first inning and added a ninth-inning solo shot to power the Brewers to a 5-2 victory over the Tigers. The Brewers loaded the bases in the opening frame on one-out singles by Robin Yount and Cecil Cooper and a walk to Ben Oglivie. Simmons grounded out to first to produce the first tally, and Thomas followed with a round-tripper. His other circuit clout led off the ninth.

The game was marred by a brawl in the third inning when Milwaukee's Oglivie was hit in the head with a pitch thrown by George Cappuzzello and charged the mound. Both benches emptied and Cappuzzello was cut on the ear in the ensuing melee. Oglivie was ejected and Cappuzzello was taken to the clubhouse for treatment. [The Sporting News]
