A grand slam by Jerry Grote -- his first homer since 1976 -- highlighted an eight-run fifth inning as the Royals outslugged the Mariners, 12-9. Grote, who ended a two-year retirement and earned a spot on the Royals as a free agent in spring training, also slapped a two-run double in the fourth and RBI single in the sixth for a K.C. club record of seven RBIs in a game.

The Royals rallied in the fifth by sending 14 batters to the plate to overcome a 5-3 deficit. Amos Otis, Lee May and George Brett singled home runs and Frank White doubled home another in an outburst that was aided by six walks. Tom Paciorek hit two homers for the Mariners. [The Sporting News]
