The Yanks scored four unearned runs in the second inning on a two-out error by third baseman Doug DeCinces, RBI single by Willie Randolph and two-run single by Gamble. Rookie pitcher Gene Nelson yielded a leadoff single to Al Bumbry in the first inning, then held the Orioles hitless until they ended a 22-inning scoreless drought with a solo homer by Rich Dauer in the ninth.
