A two-run triple by Mike Schmidt keyed a five-run third inning that propelled the Phillies to a 10-3 thumping of the Astros. Pete Rose triggered the outburst with a single and, after two outs, Gary Matthews walked and Schmidt smashed his three-bagger.

A single by Dick Davis plated Schmidt and Garry Maddox then reached first on an error by third baseman Art Howe. Larry Bowa lined a single to left and Davis and Maddox scored when the ball spun away from left fielder Jose Cruz for another error. [The Sporting News]
