A five-run rally in the eighth inning lifted the Phillies to a 5-4 triumph over the Astros. Pete Rose tied Stan Musial's N.L. record for hits (3,630) with a single in the first inning and then struck out in his next three times at bat. Rose's blow was the only hit the Phillies got off Nolan Ryan until George Vukovich singled with two out in the eighth.

At that point Ryan was forced to leave the game because of stiffness in his lower back, and the Phillies belted reliever Frank LaCorte. Gary Matthews doubled home one run and, after Mike Schmidt walked, Dick Davis singled home another. Garry Maddox followed with a three-run homer. [The Sporting News]
