Pushing across a run in the top of the ninth inning, the Braves edged the Padres, 3-2, before 52,608 fans who entered for free. San Diego owner Ray Kroc had announced that when the strike ended, he would open the gates to the public.

The score was 2-2 when Bruce Benedict opened the ninth with a double and went to third on a fly by Rafael Ramirez. One out later, Rufino Linares stroked a sacrifice fly.
