A single by Jeff Burroughs drove in the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning as the Mariners opened the new season with a 5-4 triumph over the Angels. The score was 4-4 when Gary Gray singled with one out in the eighth and was replaced by pinch-runner Joe Simpson, who stole second and tallied on Burroughs' blow. Tom Paciorek knocked in three runs for Seattle with a single in the first and two-run homer in the fifth. The Mariners' Julio Cruz, attempting to set the A.L. consecutive stolen base record, was thrown out by Ed Ott on a pitchout as he tried to pilfer second base in the seventh. Cruz had tied Willie Wilson's record of 32 straight thefts. [The Sporting News] |
