Rallying in the late innings, the Mets downed the Cubs, 4-2. New York trailed, 2-1, when Dave Kingman led off the eighth with a walk and raced to third on a single by Ellis Valentine. After Dick Tidrow replaced Lee Smith on the hill for the Cubs, Hubie Brooks delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Valentine took second on the play and, one out later, scored the go-ahead run  on a single by Doug Flynn. Brooks provided an insurance marker in the ninth with an RBI double. Mets reliever Ray Searage received credit for his first major league victory. [The Sporting News]
