K.C. got starter Larry Gura all the runs he needed in the second inning of the opener when Amos Otis led off with a single, Lee May followed with another single and Frank White then belted a three-run homer. The Royals added three more markers in the seventh on an RBI double by U.L. Washington, sacrifice fly by George Brett and run-scoring single by Otis.

A three-run rally in the seventh inning lifted the Tribe to their triumph in the nightcap. The winning surge began with a one-out single by Jorge Orta, who scored on a double by Mike Hargrove.
