The Pirates and Cubs split a doubleheader, the Bucs taking the opener, 4-3 in 11 innings, and the Cubs capturing the nightcap, 6-4, as Jay Howell received credit for his first major league victory. The first game was tied, 3-3, when Mike Easler began the 11th with a single, was sacrificed to second by John Milner, took third on a groundout by Phil Garner and came home on Tony Pena's third hit of the game.

The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the second contest on a solo homer by Bill Buckner in the first inning and added two more runs in the third on a two-run triple by Steve Henderson. Chicago loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Tim Blackwell and walks to Ivan DeJesus and Buckner before Bobby Bonds lined a single down the left field line to score all three runners.
