A pinch-single by Gene Tenace drove in the winning run in the ninth inning as the Cardinals edged the Padres, 7-6. After the Padres had bounced back from a 6-1 deficit to eventually tie the game in the eighth inning on a pinch-homer by Joe Lefebvre, the Cards got one-out singles in the ninth by pinch-hitter Mike Ramsey, Garry Templeton and Tommy Herr.

Templeton, however, rounded second too far on Herr's hit and was caught off on the throw from center fielder Ruppert Jones. Then Tenace, batting for Steve Braun, hit a 3-2 pitch for a single. [The Sporting News]
