Driving in three runs, Phil Garner sparked the Pirates to a 5-2 victory over the Padres. Garner drove in the first run in the Bucs' two-run second inning by hitting into a force play, singled home another tally in a two-run third and delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Gary Alexander drilled an RBI double in the second and Bill Robinson smacked a run-scoring double in the third. Rod Scurry, going 8 2/3 innings, was the winning pitcher and Enrique Romo got the last out for his ninth save. [The Sporting News]
