The winning run scored on a bases-loaded walk by Gary Lavelle as the Cubs edged the Giants, 6-5. The score was 5-5 when Ivan DeJesus opened the bottom of the ninth inning with a short fly that right fielder Jack Clark misplayed for a single.

Pinch-hiiter Mike Tyson sacrificed DeJesus to second. After Steve Henderson was intentionally walked and Pat Tabler flied out to move DeJesus to third, Bill Buckner walked to load the bases.
