An eight-run explosion in the fifth inning carried the Cardinals to a 9-4 decision over the Giants. The first three runs came on a bases-loaded triple by Dane Iorg. Mike Ramsey and Tommy Herr followed with RBI singles, a wild pitch accounted for another marker and Darrell Porter capped the outburst with a two-run single.

St. Louis shortstop Garry Templeton was ejected by plate umpire Bruce Froemming after the third inning when Templeton made obscene gestures to the fans. Templeton was pulled down the dugout steps by Manager Whitey Herzog, who announced after the game that Templeton had been fined $5,000, suspended indefinitely without pay and would not be permitted to rejoin the team until he publicly apologized to his teammates and the fans.
