Steve Kemp had three hits including a two-run triple to back the five-hit pitching of Milt Wilcox and give the Tigers a 3-1 victory over the White Sox despite a triple play by Chicago. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a single by Tom Brookens, walk to Alan Trammell and Kemp's three-bagger. They added another run in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Al Cowens.

The triple play came in the second inning. With runners on first and second, Cowens hit a hit-and-run fly to right fielder Harold Baines, who threw to second baseman Tony Bernazard to double Kirk Gibson off second. Bernazard then threw to first baseman Mike Squires to nail Lance Parrish at first and complete the triple play. [The Sporting News]
