Ruppert Jones drove in two runs with a homer and a sacrifice fly to lead the Padres to a 3-2 triumph over the Cubs. Jones got the Padres off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Ozzie Smith, who had singled and reached third on walks to Juan Bonilla and Luis Salazar.

Successive singles by Randy Bass, Joe Lefebvre and Jose Moreno gave the Padres a fourth-inning marker and Jones cracked a solo shot in the fifth. Rick Wise, although needed relief help from John Urrea, received credit for his first victory since May 18. [The Sporting News]
