Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Royals shaded the Brewers, 5-4. After the Brewers tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the ninth on an RBI pinch-single by Ted Simmons, Darryl Motley began the winning surge in the bottom of the inning with a one-out single. A double by U.L. Washington and intentional walk to Willie Wilson loaded the bases.

Frank White forced Motley at the plate for the second out and George Brett then hit a grounder to third baseman Ed Romero, who threw to second base trying to get a forceout but second sacker Jim Gantner failed to touch second and his relay to first was too late to nail Brett, allowing Washington score the winning run.
