The Mariners took an 8-7 victory over the Red Sox in the 20th inning of a contest that was suspended after 19 innings and completed before the following night's game. In the wrap-up of the longest game in the 69-year history of Fenway Park, Dave Henderson cracked a two-out single in the 20th inning and Joe Simpson followed with a triple.

The Sox loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the frame, but Jim Beattie came on to get Jim Rice to bounce into a game-ending forceout. The Sox had tied the struggle in the bottom of the ninth by scoring three times on a two-out, two-run single by Joe Rudi and an RBI single by Rich Gedman.
