The Pirates edged the Padres, 2-1, as Rod Scurry saved the game with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. The Bucs scored in the second inning on a two-out double by Lee Lacy and single by Steve Nicosia.

They made it 2-0 in the fourth when Jason Thompson walked with one out and came around on singles by Mike Easler and Lacy. The Padres' run came in the seventh on a two-out triple by Broderick Perkins and single by Ozzie Smith. [The Sporting News]
