A two-run pinch-single by Jason Thompson was the key blow as the Pirates edged the Phillies, 3-2. The Bucs were behind, 2-1, in the bottom of the eighth inning when Omar Moreno reached first safely on an error by shortstop Larry Bowa with one out.

A pinch-single by Willie Stargell sent Moreno to third. After Matt Alexander ran for Stargell and stole second, Bill Madlock was walked intentionally to load the bases. Thompson then slapped a single to right, scoring Moreno and Alexander. [The Sporting News]
