Garry Templeton, returning to the lineup after his suspension, sparked St. Louis in the first game by going 4-for-5, scoring two runs and driving in another. Templeton singled in the first inning, stole second and scored on a single by Keith Hernandez. He also singled in the sixth and came in on a single by Dane Iorg. In the seventh Templeton singled home Gene Roof. Bruce Sutter came on in the ninth to notch his 22nd save.

St. Louis errors helped Montreal to its second-game victory. The Expos broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth on an RBI single by Bobby Ramos and picked up two runs in the fifth on misplays by left fielder Roof and shortstop Mike Ramsey.
