The Red Sox swept a doubleheader from the Tigers, winning the first game, 2-1 in 10 innings, and taking the second contest, 5-4. The opener was deadlocked, 1-1, when Jerry Remy led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk and advanced to second on a long fly to center by Dwight Evans. One out later, Carl Yastrzemski received an intentional walk and Carney Lansford stroked a single to plate Remy.

A two-run single by Dave Stapleton was the decisive hit of the nightcap. The Sox were behind, 4-3, when Evans delivered a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh. One out later, a single by Yastrzemski sent Evans to third. A walk to Lansford filled the sacks and Stapleton followed with the game-wining safety.
