A three-run uprising in the top of the ninth inning enabled the Pirates to edge the Phillies, 7-6. The game was tied, 4-4, when Tony Pena opened the ninth with a single and reached second on a sacrifice by Lee Lacy. After pinch-hitter Willie Stargell struck out, Mike Easler lined a pinch-double to plate Pena.

Omar Moreno was then walked intentionally and Tim Foli followed with a fly to short left that Gary Matthews dropped for an error. Both Easler and Moreno scored on the play. Matthews was charged with a second error on a wild throw trying to nip Moreno at the plate. The Phils scored twice in the bottom of the frame before Mark Lee relieved to retire Manny Trillo on a groundout with a runner on third. [The Sporting News]
