Driving in three runs with an inside-the-park homer and single, Larry Herndon led the Giants to a 5-2 triumph over the Dodgers and Fernando Valenzuela. Jack Clark singled in the third and, with two out, Herndon lined a shot to right that Rick Monday attempted to shoestring. However the ball got by Monday and rolled to the fence as Herndon circled the bases.

Johnnie LeMaster singled in the fourth, went to second on a sacrifice by Ed Whitson and came in on a single by Joe Morgan. Herndon singled home Darrell Evans, who had tripled, in the fifth. [The Sporting News]
