Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cubs edged the Cardinals, 4-3. The score was 3-3 when Jody Davis drew a walk to open the Cubs' ninth. Ty Waller then bunted and both runners were safe when pitcher Mark Littell threw late to second on a forceout attempt.

Pat Tabler bunted safely to load the bases and pinch-hitter Jerry Morales followed with a sacrifice fly to end the game. The Cubs came back from a three-run deficit on a two-run homer by Waller -- the first of his major league career -- in the fifth off starter Bob Forsch and a game-tying solo shot by Leon Durham off reliever Bob Sykes in the eighth.
